LyX
What is LyX
- LyX is a document processor and not like MS Word or OpenOffice Writer which are word processors
- LyX is free and open source software (FOSS)
- LyX uses TeX which the best typesetting engine since the mid 1980s
- LyX leaves you free to concentrate on writing content and do all professional format for you
- LyX is particularly suited for editing many scientific publications e.g. articles, reports, books and even presentations
- LyX is platform independent, works on MS Windows, Linux and Mac
- LyX is a structural document processor, which means that every document should have a definite structure
- The
structure of each document should be: title, author, part, section,

How to Install LyX
I
have made an abstracted article on how to install and configure LyX in
Windows. You can find this article in the following link.
Portable LyX
Portable LyX needs no installation. You can run it directly from your
hard disk, flash drive, SD card or external USB hard disk. This
portable software is very useful and avoid all the hassles of
conventional LyX install.
This software was originally developed by Stéphane Mourey. The original software is found here
I
have made some modifications by addition of many packages which are
necessary for most of the Scientific Writing and to cope with the thesis
template I have made for Ain-Shams University.
Instructions for usage of this portable software are found in the file “Lyx-Install-portable-1.pdf” in this link.
You can found the modified zipped file of this software as a torrent file in the following link

Arabic in LyX
To
use Arabic in LyX 2.??, you can use polyglossia and XeTeX. This is will
add an unlimitted facilities to use any font installed in your
operating system.
To know how to do this with detailed instructions and examples, follow this link.
Graphics
Computer Graphics in Scientific Research
In this tutorial, you can acquire the basic skills needed to deal with graphics in scientific research. The link is here.
Scientific Publishing
Scientific Publishing Using LyX & JabRef
In this tutorial, you will learn how to use LyX with JabRef to produce a scientific article or thesis. Follow this link.
Thesis Template
A template using LyX made specifically for Master and PhD theses for
the Faculty of Dentistry, Ain-Shams University, Cairo, Egypt. However,
it can be easily adapted to suit other schools and collages.
You can view the pdf file and also you can download the zipped (compressed file) containing the original LyX file (thesis-adel-22-1-11-b.lyx) with all associated figures and tables.
